With the Nissan LEAF, we've already seen the Japanese automaker change the dynamic of everyday driving with the emission-free vehicle. This year, the automaker aims to take efficiency from the streets of Monmouth Junction and beyond, and bring it to the world of auto racing, as the Nissan DeltaWing supercharged racecar will make its debut at 24 Hours of Le Mans, the legendary endurance race in France.

Powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and producing over 300 horsepower to reach a top speed of 186 miles per hour, the DeltaWing racer looks to be the future of endurance racing, as many other highly efficient models have entered the field for the upcoming race. It will face some stiff competition, as the specs for the previous winner of Le Mans boasted a 3.7-liter V6 with 540 horsepower. Still, Nissan is confident that its racer will get the job done.

As part of the process to create the new racer, Nissan teamed up with DeltaWing and began halving everything, from weight, fuel consumption and aerodynamic drag of the vehicle. With regulations in motor racing becoming tighter over time, we've seen racing cars looking very similar to each other in appearance and build, while less and less roadside technology found in many new Nissan models have been relevant in the development of these racers. The Nissan DeltaWing plans to change that, by engineering a vehicle that stands up to standard Nissan fuel efficiency and its PureDrive strategy to promote innovation in the racing industry.
