Special Update Regarding Nissan LEAF Shortage

If you read or watch the news, you know that Nissan Motor Co. has been struggling to meet demand for its hot-selling, pure-electric LEAF. Well, according to more recent reports it may face additional tribulations when it resumes taking orders.

To put Nissan's situation into perspective: In the fiscal year, starting in April, the Japanese automaker has capacity to produce 50,000 LEAFS. This might seem like more than enough for a new electric car. However, 17,000 of those 50,000 LEAFS will go toward fulfilling existing orders. Nissan Leaf Adds Zero Emissions Hope

The Leaf (short for Leading Environmentally-friendly Affordable Family) become the first electric vehicle to win European Car of the Year. The car officially launched in the US this month, and Nissan it expects to gain a huge following and time goes on.

"The Leaf will serve as a standard, a benchmark, for other manufacturers when they build new electric vehicles," said Mamoru Kato, auto analyst at Tokai Tokyo Research Center.
